Conference Tables 101: Materials, Shapes, and Sizes Explained

Let’s say you’re looking to spruce up your conference room or are just curious about conference tables. Well, you have come to the right place. This article will give you the lowdown on conference tables, covering the basics: materials, shapes, and sizes.

What Is a Conference Table?

A conference table is the big table in the meeting room where all the brainstorming sessions, important meetings, and everything in between happen. It’s the heart of the conference room and sets the tone for collaboration and discussion. There’s a variety of tables in different sizes and shapes with a size chart to help you find the perfect fit for your room.

Materials: What Are They Made Of?

Now let’s talk about the conference table materials or what they are made of. There is a whole range of options out there. When choosing, think about the style you want for your office and how much maintenance you are willing to do.

1. Wood

Wood is a classic choice for conference tables. It is durable, looks great, and can be finished in many ways to match your office decor. You can find different wood materials for your taste, from oak to walnut.

2. Glass

If you want a modern, slick look, glass tables are the way to go. Your conference room will feel open and you can make a statement. Just keep them clean, though, because fingerprints and smudges can be a pain.

3. Metal

Metal tables are durable and can handle a lot of wear and tear, making them perfect for busy conference rooms. They are often made from steel, which gives off an industrial vibe.

4. Stone

Marble or granite tables are luxurious and make a strong impression. They are heavy and a bit more expensive, but they are also very durable.

Shapes: Which One Fits Your Needs?

Conference tables come in all sorts of shapes, and each shape has its perks. The shapes also have their personalities, so choose one that fits the kind of meeting you have and the atmosphere you want to create.

Rectangular: This shape is great for formal meetings where there’s a clear head of the table and is also efficient in terms of space.

Round tables promote equality and are perfect for smaller, more intimate meetings. They encourage everyone to face each other, which can lead to better collaboration.

Oval tables: Think of it as a longer version of the round tables. It’s good for larger groups and still maintains that sense of equality.

Boat-shaped tables: These tables have rounded ends and are similar to rectangular tables but with a softer look. They are great for large meetings and can comfortably seat more people.

Racetrack tables: They are similar to oval tables but with straight sides and rounded ends. They are versatile and can fit into different room shapes.

Square tables: these are straightforward and can be used for smaller groups. They are perfect when you need a compact table that still offers plenty of space.

Sizes: How Big Should It Be?

How big should your conference table be? This depends on how many people you need to seat.

In general, each person needs about 2.5 to 3 ft of space along the table edge. So, if you have six people sitting on one side of a rectangular table, the table should be at least 6 times 3 ft long, which is 18 ft. But let’s clarify: if it’s a table with people sitting on both sides and each side has three people, the length should be 3 times 3 ft, which is 9 ft, totaling six people. The width should be wide enough for people to visit comfortability, around 3 to 4 ft.

The diameter of round tables determines how many people can sit around them. For example, a 6 ft diameter can seat about six people. If you’re not sure about the exact size, look for a seating guide or chart that can help you find the perfect table size for your needs.

Bottom Line

We have covered pretty much all the basics here. Remember, the right conference table can make a big difference in how your meetings go. So, take your time, do your research, and pick one that suits your needs and styles.
